Slippery Slope
Also called: domino effect, chain reaction, inevitable disaster
A slippery-slope argument claims that one step will trigger a chain ending in an extreme result without enough support for the links.
A careful definition
Predicting consequences is not automatically fallacious. The problem occurs when an argument treats a long sequence as inevitable or highly likely without evidence for each important transition. The disaster at the end does the persuading, while the links in the middle go untested.

The move
- Allow or do action A.
- Assert that A will lead to B, then C, then an extreme outcome Z.
- Reject A mainly because Z would be unacceptable.
Why it can feel convincing
- The final disaster is vivid and easy to picture.
- Fear narrows attention to the worst case.
- Listeners may not stop to test whether each link is likely.

One late assignment
"If the teacher accepts one late assignment, soon every deadline will become optional and no one will finish work on time."
What went wrong:
- The argument jumps from one accepted late paper to total collapse of deadlines.
- No evidence supports the steps between the exception and the disaster.
- A single flexible case does not make every deadline meaningless.
Clear example
Hats on spirit day
"If students can wear hats on spirit days, uniforms will disappear and school rules will become meaningless."
What went wrong:
- The intermediate steps from one hat day to no rules are assumed, not shown.
- Each transition is treated as certain without any support.
- A limited exception can exist without erasing every rule.

"If this plant receives no water for several weeks, its cells will lose water, the leaves will wilt, and the plant may die."
Each link here is supported by a known mechanism and evidence, and the conclusion uses cautious wording. A well-supported chain of consequences is not a slippery slope.

A rule that shifts incentives
A proposed rule could create incentives that gradually change how students behave over a semester.
Questions to ask:
- Is there evidence for each step, or only for the first one?
- How probable is each transition, not just how possible?
- Could limits or safeguards stop the chain before the extreme outcome?
Not automatically fallacious when
- Each link is supported by evidence or a clear mechanism.
- The conclusion is expressed with an appropriate level of uncertainty.
- Historical examples and relevant differences are actually analyzed.
Diagnostic questions
- What are the steps between the first action and the final outcome?
- Is each step possible, probable, or merely imaginable?
- Is the conclusion described as inevitable without evidence?
- Could limits or safeguards stop the chain?
